How to Design a Course That Engages Every Type of Learner

Jan 24, 2025

If you’ve ever wondered how to make your online course truly resonate with your audience, here’s the secret: not everyone learns the same way.

In this week’s episode of Teaching Mastery Academy, we’re diving into one of the most overlooked aspects of course creation—designing content that speaks to all learning styles. Whether your audience thrives on visuals, needs to hear things explained, loves reading and writing, or learns best by doing, this episode breaks down exactly how to engage them and ensure they stay motivated from start to finish.

Here’s what we’re covering:

What Are Learning Styles—and Why Do They Matter?

Learning styles are preferences that affect how people absorb and process information. And while you’ve probably heard about them before, you might not realize just how much impact they have on engagement and outcomes in your course.

In the episode, I share the four primary learning styles:

  1. Visual learners (love images, videos, and diagrams).
  2. Auditory learners (process information best through sound and storytelling).
  3. Reading/Writing learners (thrive with text-based materials like handouts and guides).
  4. Kinesthetic learners (learn by doing and need hands-on activities).

When you understand these styles, you can tailor your course content to create a truly inclusive learning experience that meets your audience where they are—and keeps them coming back for more.

How to Design for Different Learning Styles

1. Visual Learners

Did you know that up to 65% of learners are visual? That means most of your audience relies on visual elements to process and retain information.

Here’s how to engage them:

  • Use infographics, charts, and graphs to explain complex ideas.
  • Add high-quality images or videos to illustrate key points.
  • Include tools like Canva to create visually stunning course materials.

Example: If your course is on gardening, include time-lapse videos of plants growing or visual diagrams of soil layers. These elements can help visual learners connect with the material and remember what they’ve learned.

2. Auditory Learners

Auditory learners process information best when they can hear it—whether through conversations, storytelling, or verbal instructions.

What works for auditory learners:

  • Narrated lessons with clear, engaging explanations.
  • Live Q&A sessions where they can ask questions and hear real-time responses.
  • Discussion boards or community spaces where they can verbally express ideas.

Fun Fact: Auditory learners can retain up to 75% of what they hear, so incorporating audio components like podcast-style lessons or voiceovers can make a huge difference in their experience.

3. Reading/Writing Learners

This group loves structure, clarity, and text-based resources. They thrive when they have written materials they can review and reflect on.

How to cater to them:

  • Provide detailed guides, workbooks, or PDFs to supplement your video lessons.
  • Break content into lists, bullet points, or short paragraphs for easy readability.
  • Incorporate journaling or reflection exercises to help them process what they’ve learned.

Example: In a productivity course, you could include a structured workbook with templates for setting goals and planning tasks. This gives reading/writing learners the tools they need to internalize the material.

4. Kinesthetic Learners

Kinesthetic learners need to get their hands dirty—literally or figuratively. They absorb information best through movement, real-world application, and interactive activities.

How to engage kinesthetic learners:

  • Include practical assignments or challenges that require action.
  • Use gamification techniques, like progress trackers or rewards, to keep them motivated.
  • Encourage them to apply concepts in real time.

Example: If you’re teaching a public speaking course, ask students to record themselves delivering a short speech and upload it for feedback. This hands-on approach helps kinesthetic learners gain confidence and practice their skills.

Avoiding Common Pitfalls

While it’s important to cater to diverse learning styles, there are some common mistakes to avoid:

  1. Overloading Content: Trying to do too much in a single lesson can overwhelm your students. Instead, focus on balance—spread out the elements across your course to keep it engaging without being chaotic.
  2. Ignoring Feedback: Your students are your best resource for figuring out what’s working and what’s not. Pay attention to their feedback and adjust accordingly.
  3. Favoring Your Own Learning Style: It’s natural to design courses in the way you learn best, but remember that your audience is diverse.

The Takeaway: Balance Is Key

At the end of the day, creating a course that resonates with everyone isn’t about bending over backward to accommodate every learning style in every module. It’s about building a balanced mix of visuals, audio, text, and hands-on activities that work together to deliver a transformative experience.

When your course speaks to your audience’s unique learning preferences, you’re not just creating content—you’re creating connection. And connection is what leads to engagement, retention, and, ultimately, success for your students.
